Tenured Professor of Emergency Medicine, Medicine, and International HealthFormer Chair, Department of Emergency Medicine (1995–2025)
Dr. Shesser is a Diplomate of the American Boards of Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine who chaired GW's Department of Emergency Medicine from 1995 to 2025. Under his three decades of leadership, the clinical enterprise grew from a single hospital with 10 faculty to a group of more than 80 physicians and 20 APPs staffing four DC-area emergency departments that receive more than 200,000 patient visits a year. He led the expansion of the department's academic programs, developing nine fellowship programs and growing its research portfolio and funding tenfold since 2000, and built out its consulting practices, including a set of telemedicine programs serving US government and private clients and DC's largest Event Medicine program. The department also partnered with hospital systems in India to develop a 24-month Indian Emergency Medicine residency that has graduated more than 1,000 physicians over the past decade. Dr. Shesser has lectured and consulted internationally and published widely on clinical topics, emergency medicine education, and emergency medicine administration.
